Hoho Chumchums with Strombolies

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

So we crossed the boarder and are about 1 hour from the woods. To wrap up this final blog we will just give a final thought or 2. This trip was about one thing. Hishtadlut in learning. .maybe the amount of time spent in monsey was short. Maybe we could have been a larger group. .. ..Maybe the weather could have cooperated more. Regardless, we wouldn’t have traded this experience in for the world. We came with proverbial empty pockets and left with tremendous riches. If we can relate this trip to the parsha in any way its that Moshe went along with Hashems plan regardless of the personal and environmental shortcomings he was up against. In a much much smaller way we did the same thing. We firmly believe that this trip was planned out by the KB (Hashem) Perhaps we aren’t ho ho chum chums just yet and we don’t wear strombolies on our heads. Nevertheless we sure have grown in the presence such great Rabbi’s and talmidey chuchumim this week. The essence of Hamilton has just fittingly arrived once again on our last blog , so we wish you a good night and thanks for joining us on this most legendary adventure!

Cottage Cheese & Chocolate Syrup + 7 Hard Boiled Eggs = …

Monday, December 27th, 2010

…don’t ask but some people think this is a perfectly good breakfast!

So today’s the day we head home. It’s been 4 jam-packed days of learning, spiritual discussion and seeing the world through a pair of 18th century bi-focals. Monsey is definitely a blast from the past in year 2010.

A blizzard whipped through the town in the past 24 hrs, leaving at least a foot and a half of snow in its wake. We weren’t sure if we would be able to drive home today, but baruch hashem the snow has stopped and the roads have been cleared. We decided to get a bit more learning in, before hitting the road. We managed to get 2.5 Shiurim in today, before deciding it was time to go. We dug our car out, got a couple of sandwiches from the kosher supermarket (which by the way puts Sobey’s Clark to shame) and made our way to the freeway. If all goes well we’ll be in by 11 pm. We’re already thinking about next year.

Stay tuned for the 7th and final blog where Ely and Amir will recount their exhilarating yeshivah trip to Monsey. Want to know more about our trip? Drop us a line, or come see us at shul on shabbat or during the week.

Rashi comments on 1 of 10 Kal-Vachomers in the Torah in this weeks parasha: If Bnai Israel will not listen to Moshe even more so Pharoh will not listen. What’s the Pshat!?

Rolled out of bed this morning with 15 minutes to Shacharit. Walk into Beit-Midrash with time to spare.

Raisin Bran cereal has been our staple breakfast here in Yeshivah. It’s either that, or some high sugar coated cereal or plain bread. The two of us realize that a Bachur diet is an extremely undesirable one. In fact we want to start our own Yeshiva when we get back into town. Its going to be called UFY (Ultimate Fighting Yid). While this yeshivah will still focus on the traditional study, there will be a strong emphasis on eating well and working-out. The Bachur diet at UFY will have learning in mind, and will be tailored to their needs. There is no doubt that the quality of learning will be drastically improved, and the Yeshivah will produce Super Talmidim Chachamim (STCs). Anyway, enough about that.

Our morning was filled with Pirkei Avot, Mishna Brura and Gemara Beyukis. We then decided to head into town to see if we could find a deal on a couple of suits. After a lot of haggling, we both walked out with two suits each from the ‘Hat Box’. Yes they sell suits too.

The snow has been coming down pretty hard the past 8 hrs, and we’re not sure we’ll be able to leave Monday, as originally planed. We might just have to stay an extra day. Must be a sign from Shamayim.

Shifra, Puah and a Geshmached Shabbos

Sunday, December 26th, 2010

As Shabbat came-in, and the Ohr Sameach’s Bait Medrash started to resonate with the Kabalat Shabbat service a special aura was felt by these two guys from Thornhill Woods. What a special place! After services, we took a walk to our host for the evening Shabbat meal. The Lachman’s were hosting us, and they were very welcoming. We tried to figure out how many kids they had, but with kids both at the table and not, one at Yeshiva, and other guests also at the meal we lost track. We think the final tally was 10. Kanaina Hora! The meal was wonderful, and with Shabbat starting so early, we were saying goodbye to our host by 8pm. What to do for the rest of the evening? We were a little tired, but it was way too early to go to bed. The two of us decided to head to the Bait Medrash and do some learning. Over the past 2 days we discovered the beauty of learning the parasha with Rashi. And over all of Shabbat realized that everyone’s Dvar Torah quoted something from this great commentator. Before we knew it, it was past 11 pm and we decided to pack it in. Except for an unexpected visitor in the middle of the night, because the door to our room wasn’t locked, we had a decent sleep.

Let me tell you, rolling out of bed 20 minutes before Shacharit and walking out the door to the Yeshivah is such a pleasure. It sure beats a 30 minute walk to shul. The two of us both had Alliyot to the Torah, which was a great honor. There was a Bar Mitzvah at the Yeshivah, so the services were followed by a kiddush. Hot Shullant, Kugel, and cake was the best way to start off the day. A breakfast for Champions! And if that wasn’t enough, we were now heading to the Reichs for lunch. There must have been at least 30 people sitting at the table! The meal was constantly interluded by wonderful Shabbat zmirot, dvar torahs and even a shot or two of green label. Let me tell you there has been no shortage of food over the past 24 hrs.

One thing that we did notice is how friendly everyone is in this town. It doesn’t matter who you are, whether you wear a shtreimel a black hat or just a kippah, everyone always wishes you a ‘Good Shabbos’. After lunch we walked back to the dorm, managed to get 20 minutes of sleep, before heading off to Mincha and third meal. Yes, yet another meal! There wasn’t much room for more food, but non-the-less it was a great time. We ate a little, sang a little and then headed off for Maariv. We davened close by in a shtebel around the corner. We’re definitely not new to davening in basements but this place was probably one of the nicest basements we’ve ever davened in. Maybe nicer than most shuls we’ve davened in.

Shabbat ended with Havdala at the same family who hosted us for third meal, and him dancing with his 3 year old son at the conclusion. We’re now both sitting on our Black Berries, contemplating what to do this evening. We might just have to head into town to get Something to eat! Just kidding!

So we pull into the shell gas station after passing 35 hassidic hitchhickers. I know you are all asking why we didnt pick one up? Here’s the pshat to that shyla. None of you ever needed stop for a person completely dressed in black, in pitch black darkness when all you could see is a white little index finger pointing into the path of your vehicle. Anyways back to the shell gas station. I go in to pay and ask the clerk to use the bathroom. He says sure but its in the office area. I go in to the back office area and through a small corridor and upon my return I see a mirage. 2 huge crock pots in the office boiling at full steam sitting on a stack of milk crates. I pose this question to the only italian in the whole town (Sal the clerk). Are you seriously making chulent? He replies in a NY accent yeah we do it every week. This place kinda turns into a deli on fridays. I looked around to make sure I wasn’t hilucinating from the candy coated chicken we just ate. But sure enough. We were in a gas station with a mezuzah, jewish newspapers, torah class cds and hassidic music, and of course a percolating chulent in the back office. That’s monsey livin my friends Shabbat shalom. Check us out after Havdala.

5:01pm

So we just got settled in to cb5. Actually a very nice set up here in the Or Sameach dorms. After a half an hour of amir trying to figure out that the Z on the door code was not a 2 we finaly made it in. Inside we found a friendly fellow named Moishee from Thornhill. A good kid and a natural leader. Monsey is a quaint little town yet to be discovered but we have to sign off as our first class starts in 20 min.

7:28am

Our trip started off on a bit of a low point with our ipod transmitter not working. Coffee from Tim Horton keeping us up along the way. Ahh! The smell of Hamilton’s essence blasting us through the vents!
Where should we stop to daven? Fallsview Casino? Uncle Jed’s farm? Side of the road?
Stay tuned for more posts from Ely and Amir’s great Yeshiva adventure.
